Three years ago when strawberry season rolled around, we had a “Strawberry Week Celebration”. We set up a tent, we had entertainment, we sold strawberry flats, and of course we had the popular strawberry shortcake. Like fate that year horrible weather forced us to move the celebration inside. The space usually used for bagging fruit was pushed aside and we set up a bunch of tables and chairs.
Once inside we started serving strawberry shortcake. One of our employees volunteered to make hot southern style biscuits to go under the strawberries, another employee said she knew how to make amazing homemade soups from scratch and just like that “Taste of Florida” Café was born.
Three years later our signature menu item (Mary Lang’s recipe) Grapefruit Pie won two taste competitions. The recipe was taken to Japan by the Florida Department of Citrus and also last summer it was featured on the Food Network show “Epicurious”. The Café was also reviewed and received 3-½ stars from Central Florida’s Food Critic, Trent Rowe. The Café is opened October through May, Monday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
